How do I get from Tirana to Berat by bus?

Travelling by bus in Albania is different from travelling by bus in Western Europe. Each of these buses is operated by a small company or a single driver. These drivers simply drive to the bus terminal, park their bus somewhere at the terminal and put up a sign saying ‘Berat’.

When you arrive at the bus terminal, the bus drivers may approach you and ask where you are going and point you to the right bus. You can also walk around the bus station yourself and look for a bus labelled ‘Berat’.

Bus travel in Albania is not so ‘organised’, it is a more individual and less timed system. The bus driver can leave earlier if the bus is full. The bus driver can wait a little longer to get a few extra passengers on board. And the bus driver can stop at the side of the road to let people on the side of the road onto the bus as extra passengers and therefore extra income. Basically, you get to your destination and at a reasonable price. But you will have to wait and you will need some patience.

Departure times

The bus station for southern and northern Albania is located outside the city centre of Tirana. So if you are staying in a hotel near the central Skanderbeg Square, you will need to take a taxi or a city bus to get to the bus station.

By taxi, the journey to the bus station takes about 15 minutes. Ask the taxi driver to drop you off at ‘TERMINALI i Autobusave të Jugut dhe Veriut’. You can hail a taxi on the street or call taxi companies such as Merr Taxi, Speed Taxi, City Taxi Tirana or Do Taxi.

The bus station in Berat is located in Rruga Antipatrea in Berat. The name of the bus station is: Terminali i Autobusave Berat.

The bus station in Berat is not located in the old town centre. I therefore recommend that you budget 10–15 euros to take a taxi to Berat Castle on the hill or to the old town. You can then explore the sights on foot.

Are you going on holiday to Berat for a few days? Then I have some advice for you: avoid the car and walk as much as possible. The narrow cobbled streets of the historic old town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, will take you back in time and make your visit a unique experience.

Once you have crossed the bridge over the Osumi River, which divides the city into two halves, you will have the opportunity to visit the other part of the city. Berat is a real gem and you can hire a bike, hop on one of the city buses or take a taxi.
