Albania is an ideal destination, especially in the shoulder season (April, May, June, September, and October). Most holidaymakers come in the height of summer (July and August). Naturally, accommodation and restaurants charge more during these months. Many beaches are also no longer idyllic in mid summer; they are overrun by tourists.

The best time to visit Albania depends largely on what you want to experience. The Balkan country offers rich culture, historic sites, pristine beaches and impressive mountains all year round. Whether you are admiring the blossoming landscapes in spring, relaxing on sunny beaches in summer, enjoying the colourful splendour of the mountains in autumn or skiing in winter, each season has its own charm.

Visit Gjirokaster in April

Gjirokaster, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its beautiful old town is breathtaking all year round. The walled miniature gardens that are the town’s trademark are in full bloom, and the streets and lanes are not yet overrun with tourists. More importantly, you are unlikely to experience the nightmare of being stuck in a car on the sloping, narrow streets with throngs of other visitors

Visiting the Blue Eye Sarande in April

You will appreciate visiting the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) even more in April, when you can skip the then empty car park and drive straight to the entrance of the Blue Eye, taking a pleasant 2-kilometre walk to the actual attraction. The natural spring with its azure-blue and clear water, surrounded by purple-flowering Judas trees, looks like something from another world.

Albania – Climate

Albania has a Mediterranean climate with rather strong temperature fluctuations. During the winter months from November to March, temperatures drop to less than 15 degrees Celsius, and at night they can even fall to 5 degrees Celsius. The amount of precipitation is highest in the winter months, with between 80 and 150 millimetres of rain falling.

In the summer months from June to September and in the autumn month of October, the amount of precipitation is significantly lower. In July, temperatures can reach up to 35 degrees Celsius, and the water temperature in July and August is also perfectly suitable for swimming at 26 degrees. In the winter months, however, the water temperature drops.
